Propeller balancing

15 Jul 2005 Propeller balancing

Information from Chris on the subaruaircraft yahoo list about balancing the MT Propeller.

Where should the small weights be attached?

To the spinner backplate, make sure that the bolt clears everything. Use AN3 bolts, 1” washers and Nyloc nuts.

What is the goal for a well balanced prop and engine combination?

Something below 0.05 IPS.

Anything else I should know ahead of time? They may know exactly how to handle my situation, but just in case, I’d like to be prepared.

Balance your spinner FIRST. Roll it on a level, flat surface. Put duct tape opposite any heavy spots. You can replace it with something more permanent later.

Make sure your prop is tracking properly; i.e. all running in the same plane. Rotate the blades past a fixed point and measure the distance forward to it from the same point on each blade.

Check that prop angles are the same. Put a band of masking tape 12” from the tip and measure the angle there for each blade.
