Muffler before (and after) welding

26 Nov 2019 Muffler before (and after) welding

If you think that mufflers are simple, have a look at this work from an amazing craftsman in Germany!
View from straight on, showing that the mufflers are not in the airflow, but shadowed by the cooling air ramp that is standard with the Van’s Aircraft RV-8. You can also see my Ikea box with my engine dryer, two engine heaters, and the video camera I use to keep an eye on the hangar cat. šŸ˜€
View from below showing the shape of the RV-8 mufflers – they weigh about 1.25 kg each. They seem to be holding up pretty well – no issues so far at over 200 hours of flight time.

I cannot give quantitative information about how much the mufflers reduce the sound level, or how much they reduce the power, if any. I have subjective feedback from experienced observers on the ground that my sound level at takeoff is “much less” than another RV-8 with identical prop and engine, but with no muffler.
