Drilling Elevator Horns

… If elevator horns don’t line up perfectly that’s ok. Just make sure that the elevators are locked in trail at the HS tips, and drill the horns for middle HS bearing, and the elevator pushrod bearing. Use washers to shim the gap between the center HS bearing and the elevator horns. If shimmed correctly, there should not be any side load on the elevator hinges when this bolt is tight!

TIP…. It is much easier to assemble the Horizontal Stabilizer and elevators upside down on the workbench. Attach the elevators with he horns pointed up, and install elevator horn center bearing bolt, nut, and the correct washer shims. Then install and shim the elevator pushrod bearing.

Just leave the pushrod bearing attached to the elevator horns. Mount the entire HS and elevator assemble on the fuselage in one piece. Then you can reach in the fuselage access hole and attach the elevator pushrod by screwing it on to the bearing, and setting the lock nut. On the other end of the pushrod, install the elevator pushrod/belcrank bolt, and everything is hooked up!

Installing the elevator pushrod bearing bolt, washers, nut and cotter-pin through the fuselage access hole is a real problem for large hands.
