Replacing the ozone generator in the spa

Off TopicI had the feeling that the ozone generator in our Hot Spring (Watkins Manufacturing) Jetsetter spa was not working right. In retrospect it seems like it has not been working right for a long time. If I didn't regularly add clorine, the spa would start to have a musty smell. Not good, so then I'd have to change the water.

I decided that I'd replace the ozone generator, but the locals wanted about 1000CHF for a new one. I found some on Ebay from China for about 100 CHF. That seemed like the thing to try.

Here is a picture of the new ozone generator, direct from China, via Ebay Canada. Even though the sticker on the box says AC120Volts 60 Hz, it is a 220Volt 50 Hz model. I suspect they are all the same inside, just with a different cord. Same price in any case.



Here is the old one. It's huge, and heavy. Seems to be 70s technology, even tho we bought the spa in 1998.



After opening up the old one, I was surprised to see that it had actually caught on fire! No wonder it didn't work. I was also shocked to see that it used about 100 watts of power to produce the ozone. The new one uses about 17 watts.



Here is where the ozone generator is installed.



Here it is actually installed. I used some hardware from the original to mount the new one. Just saved me the hassle of drilling a new hole in the spa. Notice that the hose hookup goes into the black venturi.



Another picture showing the air dryer that came with the Enaly ozone generator. I just placed it on top of the black box with the electrical stuff. It's fairly secure there, but since the spa does not move, it should be there until the next earthquake.



Here is a closeup of the electrical connection. Aviation quality 1/4" faston connectors.



The reason I mentioned that I doubt the other ozone generator has been working for a long time is that once I started this baby up, I could smell the ozone. Nice and clean. The water is *very* clean. It has been a long time since I remember it to be so clean. I'm really happy with the results of this upgrade. I'd recommend it even if the original ozone generator is still working, just to save money on electricity.
